Waving HI !

Dear Readers,
Life is crazy right (write) now, but I haven't forgotten you!
Just now, I'll pass on two quick bits of information & a joke. Tomorrow, I'll have a new bunch of Q & A for you.

Want to learn more about and HELP the free-roaming horses of Alberta, Canada?
http://northernhorse.com/wildhorses/

Sunday, Nov. 4, http://phantomstallion.org/ will have an online party in Wild Horse Hollow. Great graphics and an invitation for you. See you there!

A smile from an author friend:

A writer died and an angel with ink-smudged fingers -- a former author herself -- explained the writer had the choice of going to heaven or hell.
Being as curious in afterlife as she had been on earth, the writer decided to check out each place before she decided. First, the writer descended into the fiery pits. There, she saw row upon row of writers chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they were repeatedly whipped with thorny lashes.
"Oh my," said the writer. "Let me see heaven now."
A few moments later, as she ascended into heaven, she saw rows of writers, chained to their desks in a steaming sweatshop. As they worked, they, too, were whipped with thorny lashes.
"Wait a minute," said the writer. "This is just as bad as hell!"
"Oh no, it's not," replied the angel. "Here, your work gets published!"

IN FIRE'S PATH

Dear Readers,
Yesterday we "talked" about the horses in the California fires.
Some people fleeing in a hurry have turned horses loose and I had a report from a fire fighter friend that some pet horses are banding together and running after fire engines, hoping humans will save them.
Of course the fire fighters can't load horses onto the fire engine. They have no way to help the horses, but some of you can!
If you are in southern California, horse rescuers can use your HANDS ON help!
Here is one plea:
We need loving people to come to Animal Acres and help feed and water our rescued rescues. We need food! We need bedding! We need everything you can think of that goes with farm animals to make them comfortable, calm, and feeling safe. So LOVE is a good thing to bring along, too!

PLEASE help by:

1. Coming to Animal Acres to help care for evacuated animals here. We need caregivers from 9 am. to 3 p.m. daily. No appointment is necessary. Directions may be found at animalacres.org.

2. Volunteering to help set up an emergency evacuation area for the Animal Acres animals. We need volunteers to help put up fencing and other jobs. The more volunteers who can pitch-in, the sooner we can have a site ready for evacuation needs. Volunteers are needed EVERY DAY from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call (661-269-5404) if you can join us, and let us know what day(s) you'll be joining us.

3. Donating for evacuation needs. We URGENTLY need funding for temporary housing sheds, evacuation site fencing and corrals, water troughs & water hoses - and we need to purchase one additional transport trailer to be able to evacuate all of the animals immediately. Your donation, in any amount, will means so much.

On behalf of ALL of us at Animal Acres, and the animals who need our assistance at this difficult time, THANK YOU.

Lorri Bauston, President
Animal Acres

Animal Acres is a Los Angeles farmed animal sanctuary and compassionate living center directed by Farm Sanctuary co-founder Lorri Bauston. Thank you for your support.

California Wildfires and the Phantom

Dear Readers,
Thanks for worrying about the real Phantom. He is in California, but he's about five hundred miles away from the closest fire, so far.
Lots of domestic horses are in danger in southern California, but the equine studies department of Pierce College is opening its corrals to horses in the area. If you'd like to read more, check out this link http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=10654
Your hearts are so big, it makes me proud of you, even those I've never met!

Idea!

Dear Readers,
I'm going to be autographing books at the American Association of School Librarians convention in Reno, Nevada next week. Why should you care?
Ask your school librarian if s/he is attending. If the answer is YES, have her stop by the HarperCollins booth Thursday evening (during the Exhibit Hall Block Party!)when I'm signing and I will send you a surprise.
Happy trails,
Terri

MY HEART'S STILL WITH THE HORSES

NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY FOR HORSES IS TUESDAY OCTOBER 16!
(Doing these things will help even if you missed it)

Here are a few reasons it's important that you call :

> At least 130 wild horses died of salmonella at BLM's Palomino Valley Wild Horse Center. Salmonella is highly contagious and difficult to control. Infected horses "shed" it when they become stressed or ill. It's often present in the meat of slaughtered horses.

> BLM has zeroed out many Herd Management Areas. That means what it sounds like: all the wild horses have been removed from areas like Slumbering Hills, Antelope Range and others. For a look at those horses, visit http://mustangs4us.com/gallery_of_hmas.htm by Nancy Kerson. Blue Wings HMA has been reduced to 29 horses.

> America's horses are going to Mexican slaughter houses. if you can stand to see what's happening to them, go to the Humane Society of the United State's Animal Channel : http://hsus.org/

How can you help?

1. You can reach your federal legislators by calling the Capitol
switchboard at (202) 224-3121, or Go to Congress.org and enter your zip code to find your Representative and Senator click on each one & you will get an address & phone number.

2. Call and politely ask that your representative to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

3. Congress.org will also give you an email address. Please write a follow-up email. Feel free to use this sample:

Dear ___________:
(ENTER YOUR REPRESENTATIVE'S NAME HERE)
Please support HR 503 and S. 311. .
In 1959 and again in 1971, the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress stated: "Congress finds and declares that wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West" .
Please don't let them become a symbol of our greed.
All horses are wild at heart.
Sincerely,
__________________ (YOUR NAME GOES HERE)

4. *** Forward your copy of the response you get from your Senator or Representative to
wildhorsepower@aol.com and you'll be entered in a drawing for one of 20 autographed PHANTOM STALLION bookcovers.

My Heart's with the Horses

Dear Readers,

I am not going to post a link to the heart-stopping film of American horses shipped to Mexico for slaughter. Instead, I'll quote Nancy Perry, vice president of government affairs for The HSUS:

"Our past film footage from inside American horse slaughter facilities demonstrated what a horror show these plants were—horses were not adequately stunned and then left kicking while hoisted and having their throats slit...
"Now that states have shut their plants, our horses are subjected to intense suffering and abuse during long trips to Mexican slaughterhouses where they are stabbed to death. It is time for this carnage to end and for Congress to pass H.R. 503/S. 311 and ban the slaughter of American horses—and their export for such a purpose—once and for all."

My heart's STILL with the horses,
Terri
